Welcome to the CAGS!
We provide news, research, education, training, and updates in the field of geriatric medicine. Our interests cover a range of topics, including new developments in dementia care, geriatric pharmacology, falls prevention, technology in the care of older adults and more.
Our past seminars and workshops include:
- Dementia training for caregivers, updates on research that may hold promise in the treatment and prevention of dementia.
- Geriatric pharmacology: As the elderly population continues to grow, the field of geriatric pharmacology is becoming increasingly important. Recent studies have highlighted the need for tailored medication regimens for older adults, taking into account factors such as comorbidities, polypharmacy, and changes in renal and hepatic function. Pharmacists and healthcare providers need to work together to optimize drug therapy and avoid potential adverse drug reactions.
- Falls prevention: Falls are a common and serious problem among older adults, leading to injuries, hospitalizations, and reduced quality of life. Multifactorial interventions, including exercise programs, home modifications, and medication review, have been shown to reduce the risk of falls. The Centers for - Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers resources and guidelines for falls prevention in older adults.
- Caregiver support: Caregivers play a crucial role in supporting older adults, but the demands of caregiving can take a toll on their own health and well-being. Support programs and resources, such as respite care, caregiver training, and support groups, can help caregivers manage stress and improve their quality of life.
- Palliative care: Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses, including those at the end of life. Recent studies have shown that early palliative care can improve symptom management, reduce hospitalizations, and increase patient and family satisfaction. Palliative care should be integrated into the care of older adults with serious illnesses to provide comprehensive support for physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
We hope you join us in promoting the best care for older adults. Stay tuned for future updates and developments in the field of geriatric medicine!
